Joscha Oetz

German contrabassist/composer Joscha Oetz is an extremely versatile musician whose experiences include free improvisation, jazz, hip-hop, Cuban and Turkish musics. He has been performing, recording and playing for television and radio across Europe and beyond, and has played with artists such as Barre Phillips, Michael Brecker, Dave Liebmann and Don Byron.

Oetz released his debut CD, "The Loonators," (with his Europe-based quartet) on ZeroZero Records in 2000. This group features Oetz's compositions and represents his vision of a contemporary jazz/improvised/groove music where openness as opposed to traditionalism/purism/ignorance is the basic principle. Defining a personal and authentic sonic iidentity is the goal while a large variety of roots and influences formss the base. Nevertheless, these styles are not necessarily "heard" in the sense of quoting but become a part of a unique musical language.

Having moved to San Diego, California in the fall of 2000, Oetz studies with bass legend Bertram Turetzky. His newest project is the group Perfektomat which features spoken word by local heroes, the Able Minded Poets. This band presents a brand new approach by blending lyrics and never heard before sonic vibes in an always grooving fashion.

"Free improvisation is the avant-garde's final staging post before the abyss of raw noise...Very challenging, and we don't say that lightly."
- Duncan Bell, Muzik (UK)

"Abstract, challenging improv without all the egotistical onanism."
- Wreck This MeSS, Radio 100, Amsterdam

"Oetz is not a dry technician but a flexible and expressive player questing for eloquence. Needless to say, Phillips delivers a series of object lessons and Oetz is primed to respond in kind."
- Julian Cowley, The Wire
